Come, my beloved, my desire, don't weep,
Lift your veil, let me see your beautiful face
If I say in Arabic 'your laugh' and if I say in Persian 'your laugh'
And if I say in Turki 'your laugh,' let this world be your fragrant hair
Asia House and SOAS have partnered to present a musical concert - Sufis on the Silk Road: Nawa'I. In this concert we explore the Central Asian mystic poetry of Ali Shir Nava'i as it has been handed down in different musical traditions, from the classical songs of the Ferghana Valley to the Sufi rituals of Khotan. We bring these traditions to life on the concert stage, and create new improvisations based on their repertoires.
This collaboration brings together Europe-based Central Asian and Iranian musicians to explore the shared traditions of the Silk Road and forge new musical connections across international borders cutting across the established narrow nationalist visions of the region's culture.
Rahima Mahmut (vocals)
Sardor Mirzakhojaev (rubab and vocals)
Veria Amiri (setar)
Iskander Ding (frame drum)
